Balfour tops August contracts league with civils wins

Two major road project wins in August catapulted Balfour Beatty to the top of the monthly contracts league for the first time in several years.

The big highways schemes also helped to lift the value of the wider industry’s civil engineering orders over the last three months 5% above the same summer pre-Covid period last year.

The picture for building orders over the same period showed the industry at large still struggling to make up lost ground with orders 24% down on 2019.

Balfour leap-frogged its rivals with the £200m Mottram Moor Link Road on the Manchester to Sheffield TransPennine road upgrade and the £335m M25 Junction 10/A3 Wisley Interchange job, according to data collected by information specialist Glenigan,

Balfour’s nearest rival was league new-comers AE Elkins, reported to have a secured a £300m contract to deliver 750 modular homes for the Royal Borough of Greenwich.

In the 12-month rolling league table, Royal BAM and Kier continue to jostle for pole position with BAM this month pushing Kier back into second position.

Morgan Sindall continued to stalk the duo in third place.

Among the other big August contract wins, Laing O’Rourke secured the £123m Beckton sewage treatment works AMP7 Upgrade and Vinci bagged the £100m EcoPark South project also in London.
